How You Can Help

When confronted with the graphic pictures and heart wrenching stories coming from areas devastated by a disaster, people want to know what they can do to help. This is especially true when animals are involved. We all know they are unable to help themselves and depend on us to care for them, especially during stressful situations.

Ways to Help

During a Disaster:

During Non-Disasters:

  • Learn human CPR and first aid

  • Learn animal CPR and first aid

  • Get some disaster training by taking the FEMA -ISP (independent study program) courses https://training.fema.gov/is/

    • Locate and take the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training in your area https://www.ready.gov/cert
    • Get your passport up to date - we mobilize in Canada too
    • Obtain your tetanus shot - this is required by Noah's Wish for all volunteers and a booster is recommended every 5 years
    • Consider getting the optional Hepatitis-A and/or Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations
    • Sign up for and attend the annual volunteer in-field training. This is required by Noah's Wish on an annual basis. See Training
    • Learn the proper handling techniques of animals - especially dogs, cats, rabbits and other small mammals, domestic birds and reptiles
    • If you are a trained volunteer, make sure your own personal disaster supplies and equipment are purchased, packed and ready to go
    • Prepare your own disaster plan for your family Disaster Planning Steps or get help at https://www.redcross.org/ and for your pets Disaster Preparedness
